Shura Kitata
Biography
2020 Virgin London Marathon Champion
Born to a family of farmers in central Ethiopia, Shura Kitata started running after being inspired by the Ethiopian marathon legends he read about in newspapers and saw on TV. His debut marathon in Shanghai immediately marked him with immense talent after finishing 3rd in 2:08:50. With training partners like Lelisa Desisa, Kitata has blossomed in recent years, winning the two marathons in 2017 – Rome and Frankfurt; then going on to absolutely make his mark on the Marathon while taking Eluid Kipchoge to the limit narrowly finishing as the runner up in the 2018 London Marathon. He would then go on to finish second again in the 2018 NYC Marathon; to his teammate Lelisa Desisa. He is young for a marathoner – only 23 – and has enormous potential to grow in the coming years.
