Selemon Berega
Biography
Until recently, many Ethiopian athletes have been known to come from a particular region in Ethiopia. But Selemon Berega has helped to change the perception that all Ethiopian athletes hail from Oromia.
Growing up in southern Ethiopia, Selemon’s interest in running was neither well understood nor socially accepted. However, he continued training in pursuit of greatness, which he found early on. After a bronze medal at the 2016 East African Junior Championships in the 5000m, at just 16 he put himself on the map as a rising star. Continuing to impress, Berega dominated the IAAF U18 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, just as he began beating people 10 years his senior.
Selemon’s accomplishments have continued to multiply. He made the World Championships 5000m final and finished in second in the 3000m Indoor World Championships in 2018 and posted the fourth fastest 5000m time ever of 12:43.02 at a Diamond League race. Still, Selemon has much more to give the sport. When he’s not indulging in his favorite Ethiopian dish – kitfo – or listening to Protestant prayer, he’s training, resting, and bettering himself to be an Ethiopian legend.
