Lelisa Desisa
Biography
Desisa burst onto the marathon scene at a mere 22 years old when he won the Dubai Marathon in 2013 in 2:04:45 – one of the fastest debuts of all time. While he was beginning to establish himself on the road racing circuit in the years prior, his victory in Dubai was a life-changing moment for the athlete who ran shoeless in grade school.
Desisa continued to prove himself to be a unique phenom in athletics. He followed up his first major victory the same year winning the 2013 Boston Marathon in 2:10:22, and again in 2015 in 2:09:01.
In 2017, Nike selected Desisa to be among a cohort of three of the world’s most impressive athletes to participate in the Breaking2 attempt to run a sub-2 hour marathon. While the team came up short, the preparation indicated Desisa had potential to continue growing. In 2018, he proved this to be the case winning the New York City marathon in a blistering 2:05:59. The limits of the young star’s success continue to remain unseen.
